News: Easyjet set to launch first Austrian flights

Easyjet is to offer its first ever flights to Austria this winter.
The no-frills airline will start a new daily service between London Luton and Vienna on October 29.
Currently the only direct flights from London to Vienna are operated by Austrian Airlines (five flights a day) and British Airways (four flights a day) from Heathrow. High handling fees at Vienna have traditionally put off the budget airlines, resulting in Bratislava, just across the border in Slovakia, becoming a no-frills alternative to the Austrian capital.
Ryanair (twice daily) and SkyEurope (twice daily except Thursdays and weekends) compete on the London Stansted to Bratislava route. Regular buses cover the short distance from the airport to Hlvana station from 5am to 11pm, with the onward train journey to Vienna taking just over an hour.

Comment:
Any development of more cheap flights to Vienna has to be welcomed, as the Austrian capital is still substantially underserved by no-frills airlines, and any other airlines that matter.
Vienna’s airport has a reputation for high charges, but this could be about to change thanks to the the creation of a new facility for budget airlines. Infrastructure improvements will include a rail link to the nearby Slovakian capital, Bratislava. With homegrown budget airline Niki no longer offering direct London to Vienna flights, and with Easyjet having previously been driven off the Bratislava route, this new route marks an obvious step forward.
