Easyjet has ordered 35 of the greenest aircraft available as it looks to further expand its European route network over the next five years.
Easyjet will take delivery of the new Airbus A319 aircraft during 2011 and 2012. The airline’s chief executive, Andy Harrison, said: "Our combination of a modern fleet, with an average age of 2.3 years, and high utilisation means that we emit nearly 27 per cent fewer emissions per passenger kilometre than traditional airlines flying similar routes."
The no-frills carrier has also called for measures to penalise airlines that do not operate modern aircraft and a complete ban from European skies of aircraft built before 1990. Last month Easyjet unveiled radical plans for a new ‘Ecojet’ which would be 25% quieter and produce 50% less carbon dioxide and 75% less nitrogen dioxide than today’s most environmentally friendly aircraft.
