News: Air passenger numbers hit by rail improvements
Flights > News > # 1362 (16/07/2007)
Flights between London and Manchester have seen a 10% drop in passenger numbers over the past year.
The number of people flying between the two cities has fallen from two million per annum to 1.8 million.
Green groups claim the air route has suffered because of concerns over the environmental cost of flying, but industry insiders say the downtown is mainly due to the improvement of the West Coast Main Line. Train journey times between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly have been slashed from 2hrs 40 mins to 2hrs 10 mins, meaning the train now matches the plane for city centre to city centre trips.
Passengers have also been ditching domestic flights so they can avoid increasing security queues at British airports.
