Lufthansa has revealed dramatic plans that could change the face of long-haul travel.
The German flag-carrier is looking into introducing ‘sleeper cabins’ with bunk beds in economy class on selected overnight flights.
Fully reclining ‘flat-bed’ seats are as good as it gets at the moment, but these are usually restricted to first and business class.
Under the scheme passengers would opt to book a bed for the flight rather than a regular economy-class seat.
A Lufthansa spokesman said the plans are currently at a very early development stage and that they are canvassing customers for their opinions on the concept.

Comment:
Alternative cabin layout proposals are nothing new, but it is a significant step forward for a major international airline like Lufthansa to actually say that it is seriously considering them. The idea of high-density sleeper cabins in economy class throws up numerous concerns - for example, how would passengers eat food, and how would the cabin be configured for takeoff and landing? However, the prospect of being able to get a decent night's sleep on a flight without having to fork out a four figure sum would be a monumental step forward for air travel.
