Irish carrier Aer Lingus is opening a hub in Northern Ireland, a move which further bolsters the growing atmosphere of cooperation between the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Aer Lingus said it planned launching flights to eight European destinations from Belfast International over the next six month. Belfast will be its first hub outside the Republic of Ireland.
Chief executive, Dermot Mannion, said Aer Lingus would end its longstanding route between Shannon Airport and London Heathrow and replace it with three flights a day from Belfast to Heathrow from January 14. Aer Lingus will not face any direct competition on flights from Belfast International to Heathrow, although BMI operate eight flights a day (six on Sundays) from Belfast City to Heathrow.
The Irish national airline will also start flights from Belfast to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, Faro, Geneva, Malaga and Rome Fiumicino.
