Airlines have reported a surge in the number of Bank Holiday booking compared to this time last year.
The abysmal weather this summer has triggered a rush to sunnier climes, although the Met Office is actually predicting a warm and dry spell across the UK this weekend.
Virgin Atlantic has seen a large rise in bookings to destinations such as Los Angeles and Johannesburg, and is expecting to carry 25 per cent more passengers over the August Bank Holiday period than the same time last year.
Virgin Atlantic chief executive, Steve Ridgway, said: "August Bank Holiday is traditionally a time when many opt for a holiday but this year's disappointing weather has meant that more Britons than ever are flocking to far-flung destinations worldwide in search of summer sun."
Budget airline Easyjet has reported that it will carry ten per cent more passengers on its flights this weekend compared to last year, with Barcelona the most popular destination. Easyjet said the "unreliable English weather" was contributing to huge numbers of flight bookings.
