Easyjet plans to double the number of planes it bases at Milan’s Malpensa airport as struggling Alitalia retreats from northern Italy’s most important hub.
Alitalia plans to cut half of its flights from Malpensa, leaving a void which budget airlines are keen to exploit. Although Easyjet denied its expansion plan was a result of Alitalia's recent decision to retreat from Malpensa, it comes days after rival no-frills giant Ryanair announced plans to launch its first routes there.
In a statement yesterday (September 18), Easyjet said it would raise the number of its planes based at Malpensa from seven to 15 as it adds routes to Marrakech, Sardinia's Olbia and domestic destinations Bari and Cagliari - as announced in August.
Malpensa has been a major hub for Italian national carrier Alitalia, which is now struggling for survival after it failed to secure a buyer when the government offered it for sale.
