News: BA blames ailing US motor industry for Detroit retreat

British Airways is axing its flights from London to Detroit next spring.
It will stop Heathrow to Detroit service on March 30 after over 50 years of operating the route. Customers who have already booked flights will be offered full refunds or alternatives either with BA or other carriers.
A BA spokesman said: "Detroit was a route very dependent on the auto industry, and the changing nature of this sector made it a very challenging market to be in.
"Despite the fact we have operated in the Detroit-London market for over 50 years, we see no possible upswing in the business and have, therefore, decided to utilise the aircraft on other routes where it can make a profitable contribution to the airline's bottom line."
The scrapping of BA’s flights to Detroit does not mean the end for direct services between the Motor City and London; US carrier Northwest operates daily flights from Gatwick.
