Passengers will have to pay a charge for hold baggage when they fly on Monarch Airlines from November.
The no-frills airline will charge £3.99 per checked in bag each way for passengers who pre-book online, or £10 for passengers who pay at the airport. If hold baggage is pre-booked via the Monarch call centre the cost will be £8 per bag one way.
There is no charge for hand baggage with an allowance of one bag per person up to 10kg and within the dimensions 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.
This is the latest announcement from an airline adding extra charges for different services. From today (September 20) Ryanair will charge an extra £2 per person for passengers who check-in at the airport, in addition to a £5 charge per checked-in bag. Online check-in remains free for passengers who have hand luggage only.
Commenting on the introduction of the scheme, Monarch managing director, Liz Savage, said: “It is now common practice amongst airlines to charge those customers who elect to take hold baggage and by doing this we will be able to keep our flights prices low.
“Since the launch of our online check-in service earlier this year, there has been a notable reduction in the amount of hold baggage carried on our flights. Passengers are preferring to minimise the time spent in queues at the airport, opting to check in from home and by-passing the fast bag-drop desks at the airports by travelling with hand luggage only.”
