News: Government to review flight taxes

The Government is launching a review into flight taxes, with air passenger duty likely to be replaced by a new airline charge to encourage more efficient use of planes.
Chancellor Alistair Darling said the measure would help tackle climate change. He said: "I propose that aviation makes a greater contribution in respect of its environmental impact.”
The government is also launching a consultation on how to link the tax to the distance the flight is travelling.
Any changes to flights taxes will not be put in place until November 2009, meaning that UK passengers will have to endure paying the reviled air passenger duty for at least another two years.
