Flyglobespan has been revealed as the worst budget airline in Scotland for delays.
The Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) latest figures for the first six months of 2007 show that Flyglobespan passengers were delayed for an average of 40 minutes, compared to 17 minutes last year.
Flyglobespan came last for budget carriers flying from Glasgow and Edinburgh behind Ryanair, Easyjet, Jet2, Flybe, BmiBaby and Monarch.
One in seven of the airline’s flights was delayed by an hour or more, compared to one in 20 last year. One of the worst performing routes was Glasgow to Canada where a quarter of flights was more than three hours late.
Flyglobespan, which was Scotland’s airline of the year in 2005, blames some of the delays on two aircraft which it leased from another carrier. It says these experienced an “unusually high level of technical problems”.
Another poorly performing route was Glasgow to Palma where one in six flights was delayed by three to six hours, and one in five return flights delayed by the same time.
In June the website forum Skytrax claimed it received more complaints about Flyglobespan than all other UK airlines put together.
Flyglobespan says its service has now improved and the leased planes are operating better. A spokesman for the airline said: "In August our flights between Glasgow and Palma had an average departure delay of eight minutes and an average arrival delay of just four minutes.”
