Regional airline VLM has revealed that the problems in the rail network have boosted air services between London and north England.
Maintenance company Network Rail failed to complete engineering works on time over the new year period, leading to delays and disruption for thousands of people returning to work on January 2.
London Liverpool Street station was closed as a result of the late-running work, while services from London to Birmingham, Northampton, Liverpool and other locations were cancelled.
VLM said that the problems led to its return flights between London City and Manchester being almost sold out on January 2, with forward bookings also strong.
VLM managing director, Johan Vanneste, said: “Network Rail's failure to complete engineering work has crippled rail services between London and Manchester, and we are pleased that we have attracted new customers who have been able to experience our fast and convenient service.”
