The delays, cancellations and luggage chaos hampering British Airways operations at Heathrow Terminal 5 will continue into this week.
Further flights have been cancelled today (March 31), but BA said it will progressively increase the number of flights throughout the week.
However, this is dependent on the performance of the baggage system which has caused many of the problems at the airport and led to the cancellation of flights and major luggage delays.
There is currently a backlog of around 15,000 bags at Heathrow, a spokesman said, but BA chief executive Willie Walsh said in a statement today these are not affecting the day-to-day operation of the baggage system.
Walsh said: “We are making every effort to reunite delayed bags with their owners. We have more than 400 volunteers from across the airline supporting this effort.”
He added: “This work takes time as delayed bags must undergo enhanced levels of security screening. Much of this process has to be done manually because we have been unable to use the Terminal 5 baggage system to process these bags automatically.”
BA transferred most of its service to Terminal 5 on Thursday and was to have transferred the remainder of its flights by April 30, but this could be re-examined in light of the problems experienced in the past five days.
