Easyjet is considering closing its Dortmund base after failing to negotiate more flexible operating hours at the airport.
The no-frills airline said it has begun a review of its operations at the airport in the Ruhr region of western Germany. No flights will be shelved during the summer, but drastic cuts to the winter schedule are likely.
Easyjet currently operate flights to Dortmund from two UK airports, London Luton and Edinburgh.
In a statement, the carrier said: “Despite Easyjet’s initial belief that the situation could be remedied and repeated attempts to extend the operating hours, this situation has not changed.
“As a result, Easyjet has just three aircraft based at Dortmund which, in the context of today’s oil price, is insufficient to provide the economies of scale and crewing efficiency necessary to support a low-cost operation.
“It has not been possible to offset these cost disadvantages, which have been exacerbated by the recent increase in the price of oil.”
