News: Easyjet to cut winter flights

Flights > News > # 1841 (24/07/2008)

No-frills airline Easyjet will cut flights over the winter to due to the economic slow down and the continuing high price of fuel.
It will cut capacity at Stansted by 12% over the 2008/2009 winter season. Record oil and fuel costs have hurt airlines badly, with several going bust in recent months.
Earlier this month, Ryanair said it would cut about 250 flights from Stansted this winter as it tries to offset the increased oil prices.
Business airlines Eos, Maxjet and Silverjet have all collapsed due to the current economic crisis, whilst cash flow problems also resulted in the demise of long-haul budget airline Oasis Hong Kong.
Easyjet said it would also implement a further raft of cost-cutting measures including reducing the number of flights during less profitable times and reallocating aircraft from less popular bases to busier hubs.
An Easyjet spokesman said: “In the current environment, flexibility is vital and Easyjet continues to review its schedule and may make further adjustments, both to eliminate unprofitable flying and to seize opportunities.”
