News: BA aim for stronger ties with American Airlines

British Airways (BA) says it is confident of agreeing an alliance deal with US giant American Airlines (AA) within the next few weeks.
The talks are taking place alongside discussions between BA and the Spanish airline Iberia about a possible merger.
BA and AA already work together as partners in the One World alliance, but a new deal would see much closer cooperation in areas such as technology, ticketing and administration.
The two airlines have failed to get round tough US competition laws for a tie-up before, but BA believes that a relaxation in regulations under the new Open Skies agreement may clear the way for their plans.
BA’s most fierce rival Virgin Atlantic has said it would oppose any joint venture between the two transatlantic airlines, saying it would create "a dominant mega-power" on routes between Europe and the United States.
