News: United Airlines to scrap free meals on transatlantic flights

Struggling American carrier United Airlines is set to scrap free economy class meals on transatlantic flights from Washington DC’s Dulles airport.
United will become the first airline in the world to cut complimentary meals on long-haul flights when it introduces its latest cost-cutting measure on October 1. Even budget carriers like Zoom Airlines, Air Transat and Thomsonfly offer free meals on long-haul transatlantic routes.
In a memo to employees, United said: "These changes are difficult, but necessary, and we do not make them lightly. However, they enable us to reduce costs and generate additional revenue while preserving a differentiated product for our premium cabin customers."

Comment:
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, which compete with United on flights to Dulles from London Heathrow, already boast considerably better customer service reputations than their American rival. This latest news gives travellers yet another reason to dump United in favour of the British carriers.
