News: Eastern Airways to launch Amsterdam flights from London City

Business specialist Eastern Airways is launching flights to Amsterdam from London City early next year.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has authorised Eastern Airways to start the route following its assessment that the acquisition of VLM Airlines by the Air France KLM group would stifle competition on the popular route. Carriers in the group presently account for more than 70 per cent of weekly flights between the two airports, limiting opportunities for rival airlines to operate competing services.
OFT spokesman Simon Pritchard insisted that the introduction of Eastern Airways would benefit customers by restoring price and service competition to pre-merger levels.
"Our slot remedy would not have worked if no new entrant emerged to compete with KLM post-merger," he noted. "We are now confident that Eastern Airways, with the necessary slots, will restore competition to pre-merger levels.”
