Lufthansa’s board has approved a deal to buy Austrian Airlines, giving the German giant access to more routes across Europe and beyond.
Austria's government decided in August to sell off its share in the ailing national airline, which is €900 million in debt.
Lufthansa has recently increased its stake in British airline BMI to 80 per cent, securing valuable slots at London Heathrow in the process. In September, it acquired a 45-percent stake in Brussels Airlines, with an option to buy the rest in 2011, and has been long linked with a move for bankrupt Italian carrier Alitalia.
