UK regional rivals Air Southwest and Flybe have started a war of words over new flights between London Gatwick and Newquay.
The deputy chief executive of Air Southwest, Mike Coombes, made a scathing attack on Flybe after it announced it would be launching hi-frequency flights between Newquay and Gatwick on February 15. Air Southwest already operates this route, and Mr Coombes accused Flybe of having a “poor track record” at Newquay.
He said: “What Newquay Airport and Cornwall’s economy needs more than anything at the moment is the stability that comes from year-round air services, not fair-weather friends seeking to duplicate existing flights.
“Flybe has a very poor track record at Newquay, having promised the earth and delivered very little, so customers have a right to question their commitment to Cornwall. “Last year Flybe announced a range of new routes from Newquay, none of which is currently flying.”
But Flybe insisted that the new service to London “cements its position as the fastest-growing airline at the airport” and “reaffirms its ability to grow even in challenging economic times”.
