News: Birmingham to Frankfurt flights price comparison
Flights > News > # 2065 (27/01/2009)
There are currently three airlines offering flights to Frankfurt from Birmingham. Flybe and Lufthansa fly to Frankfurt International, which is situated seven miles from the city centre, whilst Ryanair flies to Hahn airport, which is 75 miles from downtown Frankfurt.
We selected three different types of flight for our comparison; a last minute booking, a mid-week trip and a weekend mini-break. The flight prices listed below are per person including taxes, charges and card fees. The fares do not include extras such as hold baggage, priority boarding and travel insurance.
The first test was for a last minute flight leaving tomorrow (January 28) and coming back on Thursday (January 29). Ryanair had no flights on the specified dates, so it was a straight fight between Flybe and Lufthansa. The Flybe fare was £260.99, whereas the cost of flying with Lufthansa on the same dates was £347.60. The first round is a clear win for Flybe.
Next up was a mid-week trip in March, flying out on Tuesday March 24, returning on Thursday March 26. The Flybe fare was £83.15. Ryanair once again fell at the first hurdle due to a lack of availability, whilst Lufthansa was much more competitive this time with return flights available for £98.80. Flybe was still cheaper by over £15, but Lufthansa’s higher flight frequency is a major draw if you value the added flexibility this offers.
The final comparison was for a weekend in February, going out on February 21 and back on February 22. The Lufthansa fare was £172.60, compared to Flybe’s fare of £124.99. Ryanair don’t fly to Hahn on Saturdays, but leaving on the Friday and coming back on the Sunday we found a fare for £60.40. Wow, Ryanair is half the price of Flybe. Surely Ryanair is the way to go? In theory yes, but in practice you should note that the bus journey from Hahn airport to central Frankfurt takes 1 hour and 45 minutes each way and adds another £22 to the cost of your trip. If you are time rich, then take the Ryanair option, but if convenience is key to you, then we would strongly recommend going with Flybe.
Overall we found that Flybe offers the best mix of cheap flights and convenience on the Birmingham to Frankfurt route. Next week we take a look at flight prices on one of the world’s most competitive international routes – London to New York.
