Bmi wants to launch the first flights from Britain to Baghdad for nearly 20 years.
The British carrier has met with senior Iraqi government officials and told them it is ready and willing to provide flights between the two countries.
If the new service took off, it would mark the first regular flights between Britain and Iraq since the first Gulf War in 1991. Bmi already operates an extensive network of flights to a host of Middle Eastern destination from its London Heathrow base, including Aleppo, Amman, Bahrain, Beirut, Cairo, Damascus, Dammam, Jeddah, Riyadh and Tehran.
