News: Summer washout triggers rush for 2010 bookings

The atrocious UK summer weather has triggered an early rush for flight bookings to European hotspots next year.
Several budget airlines have already announced their timetables summer 2010 due to demand from holidaymakers who are unwilling to gamble on whether they might get some sun in the UK.
In June, BMI Baby became the first budget airline to announce the first phase of its summer 2010 flying programme.
Easyjet followed suit in July when it started selling seats for its spring timetable – well ahead of its normal schedule.
The airline said it released the timetable early to encourage more people to book their flights online and get the best deals.
Flightmapping.com founder James Avery said he has already seen a lot of interest in Summer 2010 flights as well as a surge of last minute searches for flights to Mediterranean resorts.
He said: “Despite the usual predictions from the Met Office of hot weather in the UK, once again the British summer has been a complete washout.
“It would appear holidaymakers are not prepared to take a chance on the unreliable British weather next summer and are booking well in advance to get the best deals.
“It is easy to see why this is happening. The recession has really put into focus the importance of picking the right destinations. Choosing between a rain soaked week in the UK or a sun drenched holiday in one of the southern European hotspots is a pretty easy choice.”
