Frankfurt International operator Fraport wants more low cost airlines to use the airport after its new runway is opened in 2011.
Fraport's chief executive, Stefan Schulte, said the airport has already held initial discussions with some no-frills carriers, including EasyJet.
The new runway could also offer growth prospects for cheap flights from Asia.
The prospect of cheap flights to Frankfurt International would be a huge boon to budget conscious travellers who currently have to endure the 140-mile round trip to and from Ryanair hub Frankfurt Hahn. Frankfurt International has the advantage of being located just seven miles from downtown Frankfurt, with a speedy rail link straight into the city centre.
