British Airways (BA) subsidiary CityFlyer may start holiday flights from London City next summer to exploit the longer range of a new fleet of regional aircraft and boost volumes in the quietest months for business travel.
Destinations served using five new Embraer E-190 jets could include the Balearic Islands of Majorca and Ibiza.
CityFlyer managing director Peter Simpson said: “We would hope to put our toe in the water later next year. We would look to sweat the assets.”
The 98-seat E-190 has a range of as much as 2,400 nautical miles, about 1,000 miles further than the BAE RJ aircraft that they are replacing.
CityFlyer currently offers nine routes from London City to business destinations including Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. The airline would fly the holiday routes using the larger E-190 jets as leisure flights typically generate less revenue than business services, Simpson said, meaning more passengers have to be carried to make a trip profitable.
