News: Branson calls for crackdown on extra airline fees

Virgin Atlantic boss Sir Richard Branson has called for a crackdown on the extra charges airlines add on to flight prices.
Passengers regularly have to pay extra fees for everything from luggage to meals, in-flight entertainment and for choosing to pay with a credit card.
Sir Richard says the increasing number of extra fees travellers are being charged can significantly push up the cost of flying and has called on regulators to enforce a common standard across ticketing prices.
He said: “The extra fees are not a good idea. The problem is that once one airline has done it, it makes their basic ticket price look less and therefore the other airlines have to match it otherwise people think that the other airline is cheaper than they are.
“Everything should be shown in the ticket price upfront and that is something that the regulators should consider enforcing.”
