Spain's national carrier Iberia will create a new airline to handle its short and medium-haul routes so that it can concentrate on lucrative long-haul flights to Latin America.
From 2011, the new airline will connect a host of European cities to the airline's Madrid hub, from where travellers can tap into Iberia’s extensive network of long-haul flights.
The move is part of a plan to put a halt to the airline’s mounting losses. Iberia chief executive Rafael Sanchez-Lozano said: "The airline industry has never experienced such a dramatic situation.
"It is essential for us to use imaginative means to transform Iberia into a sound and viable project.
