Ryanair has come near the bottom of a survey ranking the ethical reputation of almost 600 international companies.
The Irish no-frills airline was placed 575th out of 581 firms listed in the survey carried out by Swiss research group Covalence.
Ryanair finished below cigarette manufacturer British American Tobacco and controversial oil giant Exxon Mobil. Companies were evaluated for environmental performance, corporate social responsibility and consumer relations. Covalence compiled data encompasses 45 criteria that include labour standards, waste management records, human rights issues and media profile.
The report noted that Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary is known for his “outrageous behaviour and aggressive cost-cutting measures” and that the airline’s employees are allegedly forbidden from using the company’s pens or charging their mobile phones at work.
